Fr. Tim's Homilies

Lk 7:1-10

After Jesus had finished all his sayings in the hearing of the people, he entered the town of Capernaum. A centurion there had a slave whom he valued highly, who was ill and close to death. When the centurion heard about Jesus, he sent some Jewish elders to him, asking him to come and heal his slave. When they came asking him to come and heal his slave. When they came to Jesus, the elders appealed to him earnestly, saying, he is worthy of having you do this for him, for he loves our people and it is he who built our synagogue for us. And Jesus went with them.
But when he was not far from the house, the centurion sent friends to say to him, 'Lord, do not trouble yourself for I am not worthy to have you come under my roof. Therefore, I did not presume to come to you. But only speak the word and let my servant be healed. For I am also a man set under authority with soldiers under me. And I say to one go, and he goes, and to another, come, and he comes. And I say to my slave, do this, and the slave does it.' When Jesus heard this, he was amazed at the centurion. And turning to the crowd that followed him, he said, 'I tell you, not even in Israel have I found such faith.' When those who had been sent returned to the house, they found the slave in good health.

Mk 3:22-30

Some scribes came down from Jerusalem and said of Jesus, 'he is possessed by Beelzebul, and by the ruler of demons he casts out demons', but Jesus called out to them and spoke to them in parables. 'How can Satan cast out Satan? If a kingdom is divided against itself, that kingdom cannot stand, and if a house is divided against itself, that house will not be able to stand. And if Satan has risen up against himself and is divided, he cannot stand. But his end has come. No one can enter a strong man's house and plunder his property without first tying up the strong man, then indeed the house can be plundered. And truly I tell you, people will be forgiven their sins and whatever blasphemies they utter, but whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit can never have forgiveness, but is guilty of an eternal sin.' For the scribes had said, Jesus has an unclean spirit.

Lk 11:29-32

When the crowds were increasing, Jesus began to say 'this generation is an evil generation. It asks for a sign. But no sign will be given to it except the sign of Jonah. For just as Jonah became a sign to the people of Nineveh, so the son of man will be to this generation. The queen of the South will rise at the judgment with the people of this generation and condemn them, because she came from the ends of the earth to listen to the wisdom of Solomon and see something greater than Solomon is here. The people of Nineveh will rise up at the judgment with this generation and condemn it because they repented at the proclamation of Jonah and see something greater than Jonah is here.'

Mk 2:23-28

One Sabbath, Jesus and his disciples were going through the grain field.

And as they made their way, his disciples began to pluck heads of grain. The Pharisees said to him, 'look, why are they doing what is not lawful on the Sabbath?' And Jesus said to them, 'have you never read what David did when he is and his companions were hungry and in need of food? He entered the house of god when Abiathar was high priest and ate the bread of the presence, which it is not lawful for any but the priest to eat. And he gave some to his companions.' Then Jesus said to them, 'the Sabbath was made for people and not people for the Sabbath. So the son of man is Lord even of the Sabbath.'

Lk 18:35-43

As Jesus approached Jericho, a man who was blind was sitting by the roadside begging.

When he heard a crowd going by, he asked what was happening. They told him, Jesus of Nazareth is passing by. Then he shouted, 'Jesus, son of David, have mercy on me.' Those who were in front sternly ordered him to be quiet, but he shouted even more loudly, 'son of David, have mercy on me.' Jesus stood still, ordered the man to be brought to him.

And and when he came near, Jesus asked him, 'what do you want me to do for you?' The man said, 'Lord, let me see again.' Jesus said to him, 'receive your sight. Your faith has saved you.' Immediately, he regained his sight and followed Jesus glorifying God and all the people when they saw it, praise God.

Lk 12:13-21

Someone in the crowd said to him, “Teacher, tell my brother to divide the inheritance with me.”

Jesus replied, “Man, who appointed me a judge or an arbiter between you?” Then he said to them, “Watch out! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; life does not consist in an abundance of possessions.”

And he told them this parable: “The ground of a certain rich man yielded an abundant harvest. He thought to himself, ‘What shall I do? I have no place to store my crops.’ Then he said, ‘This is what I’ll do. I will tear down my barns and build bigger ones, and there I will store my surplus grain. And I’ll say to myself, “You have plenty of grain laid up for many years. Take life easy; eat, drink and be merry.”’

“But God said to him, ‘You fool! This very night your life will be demanded from you. Then who will get what you have prepared for yourself?’ “This is how it will be with whoever stores up things for themselves but is not rich toward God.”

Jn 5:1-16

Some time later, Jesus went up to Jerusalem for one of the Jewish festivals. Now there is in Jerusalem near the Sheep Gate a pool, which in Aramaic is called Bethesda and which is surrounded by five covered colonnades. Here a great number of disabled people used to lie—the blind, the lame, the paralyzed. One who was there had been an invalid for thirty-eight years. 6 When Jesus saw him lying there and learned that he had been in this condition for a long time, he asked him, “Do you want to get well?” “Sir,” the invalid replied, “I have no one to help me into the pool when the water is stirred. While I am trying to get in, someone else goes down ahead of me.” Then Jesus said to him, “Get up! Pick up your mat and walk.” At once the man was cured; he picked up his mat and walked.

The day on which this took place was a Sabbath, and so the Jewish leaders said to the man who had been healed, “It is the Sabbath; the law forbids you to carry your mat.” But he replied, “The man who made me well said to me, ‘Pick up your mat and walk.’ ” So they asked him, “Who is this fellow who told you to pick it up and walk?” The man who was healed had no idea who it was, for Jesus had slipped away into the crowd that was there. Later Jesus found him at the temple and said to him, “See, you are well again. Stop sinning or something worse may happen to you.” The man went away and told the Jewish leaders that it was Jesus who had made him well.

Jn 6:22-29

After Jesus had fed the crowd from the five loaves, he crossed the lake by walking on the sea.

The next day, the crowd that had stayed on the other side of the sea saw that there had been only one boat there. They saw that Jesus had not got into the boat with his disciples, but that his disciples got into the boats and went to Capernaum looking for Jesus. When they found Jesus on the other side of the sea, they said to him, 'Rabbi, where did you come here? When did you come here?' Jesus answered, 'very truly I tell you, you were looking for me not because you saw signs, but because you ate your fill of the loaves. Do not work for the food that perishes, but for the food that endures for eternal life which the Son of Man will give you. For it is on him that God the Father has set his seal.' Then they said to him, 'what must we do to perform the works of God?' Jesus answered them, 'this is the work of God that you believe in him whom he has sent.'

Jn 3:7-15

Jesus said to Nicodemus, 'do not be astonished that I said to you, you must be born from above.

The wind blows where it chooses and you hear the sound of it, but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes. So it is with everyone who is born of the spirit.' Nicodemus said to him, 'how can these things be?' Jesus answered him, 'are you a teacher of Israel and yet you do not understand these things? Very truly I tell you, we speak of what we know and testify to what we have seen, yet you do not receive our testimony.

If I have told you about earthly things and you do not believe, how can you believe if I tell you about heavenly things? No one has ascended into heaven except the one who descended from heaven, the son of man. And just as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the son of man be lifted up, that whoever believes in him may have eternal life.'

Lk 10:1-9

From among his disciples, the Lord appointed seventy two and sent them on ahead of him in pairs to every town and place where he himself intended to go.

He said to them, 'the harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few. Therefore ask the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest. Go on your way. I am sending you out like lambs into the midst of wolves. Carry no purse, no bag, no sandals. Greet no one on the road. Whatever house you enter, say peace to this house. And if anyone is there who shares in peace, your peace will rest on that person. If not, it will return to you. Remain in the same house, eating and drinking whatever they provide, for the laborer deserves to be paid. Do not move about from house to house. Whenever you enter a town and its people welcome you, eat what is set before you. Cure the sick who are there and say to them, the kingdom of God has come near to you.'

Lk 8:19-21

Jesus's mother and his brothers came to him, but they could not reach him because of the crowd.

And he was told your mother and your brothers are standing outside waiting to see you. But Jesus said to them, my mother and my brothers are those who hear the word of God and do it.

Mk 2:18-22

John's disciples and the Pharisees were fasting Jesus said to them, the wedding guests cannot fast while the bridegroom is with them, can they?

As long as they have the bridegroom with them, they cannot fast. The days will come when the bridegroom is taken away from them, and then they will fast on that day. No one sews a piece of untrunken cloth on an old cloak. Otherwise, a patch pulls away from it. The new from the old and a worse tear is made.

And no one puts new wine into old wineskins. Otherwise, the wine will burst the skins and the wine is lost and so are the skins. One puts new wine into fresh skins.

Lk 9:22-25

Jesus said the disciples passed through Galilee.

He did not want anyone to know it, for he was teaching his disciples, saying to them, the Son of Man is to be betrayed into human hands and they will kill him. And three days after being killed, he will rise again. But they did not understand what he was saying and were afraid to ask. Then they came to Capernaum. And when he was in the house, Jesus asked them, 'what were you arguing about on the way?'

But they were silent, for on the way they had argued with one another who was the greatest. Jesus sat down, called the Twelve, and said to them, 'whoever wants to be first must be last of all and servant of all.' Then he took a little child and put it among them, and taking it in his arms, he said to them, 'whoever welcomes one such child in my name welcomes me. And whoever welcomes me welcomes not me, but the one who sent me.'

Mt 25:31-46

Jesus said to his disciples, when the son of man comes in his glory and all the angels with him, he will sit on the throne of his glory. All the nations will be gathered before him, and he will separate people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. And he will put the sheep at his right hand and the goats at the left. Then the king will say to those at the right hand, 'come, you that are blessed by my father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world. For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink. A stranger, you welcomed me. Naked, you gave me clothing. Sick, and you took care of me. I was in prison and you visited me.' Then the righteous will answer, 'Lord, when was it we saw you hungry and gave you food or thirsty and gave you something to drink? When was it we saw you a stranger or naked? When was it we saw you sick or in prison?' And the king will answer them, 'truly I tell you, just as you did it to one of the least of these sisters and brothers of mine, you did it to me.' Then he will say to those on his left, 'you that are accursed, depart from me into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels. I was hungry, you gave me no food. Thirsty, you gave me nothing to drink. A stranger, you did not welcome me. Naked, you gave me no clothing. Sick and in prison and you did not visit me.' Then they will answer, 'Lord, when was it we saw you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or sick or in prison and did not take care of you?' And he will answer, 'truly, I tell you, just as you did not do it to one of the least of these, you did not do it to me.' And these will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.

Jn 8:1-11

Jesus went to the Mount Of Olives early in the morning, he came to the temple. The people came to him and he sat down and began to teach them. The scribes and the Pharisees brought a woman who had been caught in adultery, and making her stand before all of them, they said to him, 'teacher, this woman was caught in the very act of committing adultery. Now in the law, Moses commanded us to to stone such women. What do you say?' They said this to test him so that they might have some charge to bring against him. Jesus bent down and wrote with his finger on the ground. When they kept on questioning him, he straightened up and said to them, 'let anyone among you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone at her. Once again, he bent down and wrote on the the ground.'

When they heard it, they went away one by one beginning with the elders and Jesus was left alone with the woman standing before him. Jesus straightened up and said to her, 'woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?' She said, 'no one, sir.' And Jesus said, 'neither do I condemn you. Go your way. From now on, do not sin again.'
